Faces in History: The Mythical Isle of Atlantis
a bust of Plato
Plato’s story about an advanced island that was destroyed overnight has captured our imagination for millennia. Many people still try to seek this fabled isle – why? Did it really exist – or was Plato using a story to explain his philosophical and political viewpoint? Who was Plato and how should we understand the works of this social commentator and philosopher?

ancient fresco of the harbour at Akrotiri, Thera (Santorini)
One idea is that Plato based his story on a memory of the Minoan civilisation that was destroyed by an earthquake in around 1650BC. They certainly were an advanced civilization but are there any clues to link Plato’s Atlantis and the Minoan world?
Excavations at Akrotiri, Thera (modern day Santorini) on the island of Santorini revealing streets with 2 storey buildings showing windows and pots, a fresco of a young lad with a headdress and a fresco of antelopes and 2 young men fighting
Let us talk about Plato, the various theories and gaze with wonder on the beautiful art and artefacts from the remarkable peace loving Minoans - and discuss the possibilities.
