Dr Phil Mills is a freelance ceramic building material and Roman pottery specialist. He has been working on CBM for 16 years and was awarded hi s PhD on ' The Ancient Mediterranean Trade in CBM: a case study in Beirut and Carthage ' by the University of Leicester in 2006. His research interests include the Roman and Late Antique economy, urban and rural form and development, and the development of integrated methodologies, especially using databases and multivariate approaches to artefact assemblages.

The History of Glass
led by John Shepherd
The workshop will examine a number of aspects of glassware and window glass over its long history.
The focus,
however, will be on archaeological material from the Roman period onwards and will examine the kinds of glass
that normally turn up in excavations and evaluations on multi-period sites in Boroughs such as Bexley.
The day will be in three sessions.
10-12 - Glass. A presentation on its history, changes in technology and fashion with the emphasis on glass in Britain.
12-1 – lunch

More detailed examination of key repertoires with a focus upon identifying the features that allow us to distinguish one datable fragment from another. This will be conducted by means of a presentation and handling session.
3-3.30 - Break
3.30-4.30 - Discussion and examination of examples brought in for identification (hopefully, by the attendees
John Shepherd used to work at he Museum of London. He was there for 20 years, leaving in early 2005 after curating the Grimes archive and setting up the LAARC. He is now a freelance consultant, working with
museums and trusts, commercial units and local societies. His specialism, though, is the study of glass,
especially archaeological material in this country from the Roman period up to AD1850.

Saturday 28th April -Richard Carter- Palaeolithic & Mesolithic hunter-gatherers

An all day workshop led by Richard Carter, looking at the evidence for how Palaeolithic & Mesolithic hunter-gatherers lived during and after the last Ice Age in NW Europe. This allows an examination of the environment, both animal and human ecology and interpretations of behaviour patterns. It is an area of archaeology that people are often unaware of, but is so important in that it comprises 99% of our human past. We will also look closely at the local situation and recent excavations in the SE of England.

Novice excavators from outside the Group are also welcome to join us at our on-going site named Autumn. Minimum unaccompanied age is 16 (with parents consent).
All excavators will have the opportunity to experience the basic main tasks associated with an excavation under the supervision and guidance from members of the Field Unit of Bexley Archaeological Group. Tasks carried out during this training excavation will include:
