“Unravelling the Mysteries of the Bayeux Tapestry”
Led by Prof Michael Lewis (British Museum)
In this talk, Michael Lewis will explore some of the mysteries of the Bayeux Tapestry and dispel a few myths! Most historians believe the Tapestry was made in Canterbury under the direction of Bishop Odo of Bayeux. If this was the case, what was its purpose, and why did it end up in Bayeux? Also, why does the Tapestry show certain individuals – like the mysterious AElfgyva – and not others? And what about Harold being killed with an arrow in the eye? Did that happen, or was it made up, and if so, why?
Michael is Head of the Portable Antiquities Scheme at the British Museum and Visiting Professor at the Universities of Helsinki and Reading. He has written many articles and books on the Bayeux Tapestry, the most recent (with David Musgrove) titled The Story of the Bayeux Tapestry (Thames & Hudson).
Talk will be held in the BSCC, 19 Station Road, Sidcup, DA15 7EB
Entrance via Stanhope Road. There is a small carpark to the rear and down Stanhope Road (residential). The public carpark is off Main Road – just next to the United Services Club, and about a 5 minute walk away from where the talk is to be held.
